ACR License Information

There are several steps to obtaining your Texas HVAC Contractor's License:

1) Apply with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation NOTE: The license requirements are to provide 48 months of practical experience in air conditioning and refrigeration related work under the supervision of a licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contactor in the preceding 72 months.

Class A Environmental Air Conditioning endorsement entitles the license holder to engage in air conditioning contracting for environmental air conditioning in relation to a system, a product, or equipment of any size or capacity.

Class B Environmental Air Conditioning endorsement entitles the license holder to engage in air conditioning contracting for environmental air conditioning in relation to a system, a product, or equipment of not more than:  (1) 25 tons cooling capacity; or (2) 1.5 million British thermal units per hour output heating capacity

Class A Commercial Refrigeration and Process Cooling or Heating endorsement entitles the license holder to engage in refrigeration contracting for commercial refrigeration and process cooling or heating in relation to a system, a product, or equipment of any size or capacity.

Class B Commercial Refrigeration and Process Cooling or Heating endorsement entitles the license holder to engage in refrigeration contracting for commercial refrigeration and process cooling or heating in relation to a system, a product, or equipment of not more than: (1) 25 tons cooling capacity; or (2) 1.5 million British thermal units per hour output heating capacity.

2) Sign up for and take a ACR Prep Course with TACCA
  • NOTE: This is not required but it is highly recommended!
  • The pass rate for all first time test takers is ONLY 20%!
  • Our Prep Course has been shown to increase first time pass rate to 75%!
  • We recommend taking your exam about a week after you take the Prep Course
  • You are eligible to repeat the prep course within a year for a fee. Contact TACCA to learn more. 512-320-0616
3) Contact PSI to schedule your License Exam
  • You will be given a test code by the Department of Licensing when approved.

4) Take Exam
  • NOTE: This is an open book exam
  • Required Book List, see PSI Bulletin. (9-2024, see NEW Book references)
5) Notify the Department of Licensing of your passing score, show proof of liability insurance, and pay license fee.

If you do not pass the exam, you may continue to retake the written exam until your application expires (one year from date submitted). When your application expires, you will need to submit a new application before you can retake the exam.
